It Just Needed Something . . .

First, let me just say that I have a sickness. Obsessive. Compulsive. Decorating. I can't help it so lets just roll with it. Okie Dokie.


Remember when I painted and redecorated my kids bathroom oh about 4 months ago? I liked how everything turned out except it still needed something. I couldn't figure out what it was until one day while in blogland I saw (sorry I don't remember who) a bathroom cabinet painted chocolate brown. That was it!! Eureka!! I had painted my cabinet white (it was oak) and it liked it but didn't love it. It seemed that the countertop (that's white) and the cabinet all blended together.

Today I finally got around to painting it and I absolutely LOVE the way it looks! I also hung some artwork and I think the bathroom is finally complete.

AFTER

About the artwork - when we were visiting my in-laws last year, they have photos of dogs peeing on a sidewalk and tree in their bathrooms. The artist is French (my MIL is French) and she got them years ago when they lived in Europe.  Sounds weird but they are hilarious and my kids loved them. I found small prints by the same artist on e-bay for only a few dollars and framed them. I can guarantee that not many people have prints of dogs peeing in their bathroom! Yes, I'm strange, but they look cute in the kids bathroom.

So there you have it. I feel MUCH better now that I painted the cabinet. I'm thinking about doing the same in my master bathroom. The painting and decorating never ends.  : )

I'm So Happy!

Do you ever have one of those days (or weekends) where you get a ton of stuff done? Well, this weekend was like that for me!  First, we've had great weather. Warm and breezy - nothing like it should be for the end of October in Ohio.  Handyman Hubby worked outside and got a bunch of yard work done. He also cleaned out both fish tanks (both my girls have small fish tanks in their room).  I cleaned out 2 closets and have a huge pile of clothes to donate and take to the resale store. I also did 5 loads of laundry, cleaned the kids bathroom, put clean sheets on all the beds and oh yeah, drove my teenage daughter to a friends house, to the movies etc. etc. I should order some vinyl letters for my car that say TAXI!!!!

I hope you all had a nice (and productive) weekend! I have some more projects planned for this week - hopefully I'll stay motivated to get them done!!   : )

Relaxing Master Bedroom

Hello everyone! Today I'm sharing photos of our master bedroom.

 Remember my curtain fiasco I told you about in my last post?

 Well, I found some new window panels at my fave store Tar-jay and they look so much

 better than the old ones!

All the bedding is from Target. I told you it's my favorite store. The 2 brown pillows I got at Homegoods. Above the bed, I framed black & white photos of my girls.

This is my little reading corner with another Target pillow and comfy throw.  On the wall is a

plate I found at Marshalls for $6.00, a Southern Living at Home trivet and a photo from the

Graphic's Fairy that I framed. Looove the Graphic's Fairy!

Here is my Goodwill find I told you about here. I originally thought I would paint the

frame but it looks perfect just the way it is!  

Here is Handyman Hubby's dresser. The turquoise star is the first thing I purchased for

the room. It is my favorite color and I just looove it!!  The clock is from Michael's and there is 

my dollar store glass candle holder! Those things rock! I've made 4 already and have them

all over my house.

I spruced up the lamp shade with some trim from JoAnn's. 

I found the large wood circle at Homegoods and framed some

 more Graphic's Fairy artwork. I love chunky black candlesticks and found these at Marshalls.

Honey, I shrunk the curtains!!!!!

Oops! I honestly didn't mean to do this.  I really did want new curtains for my master bedroom but I swear that I didn't shrink them on purpose.  Really!  You believe me, right?  I don't think handyman hubby believes me either.  : (

The curtains were just cheapo tab top panels that I've had forever. They were looking really dusty so I washed them and dried them on extra low. I hung them back up and realized they shrunk quite a bit so I had to get something new. I couldn't leave them hanging there like that.  All short and looking weird.  Thank goodness the sheer panels didn't shrink - I loooove them so they are staying!!

My fave store Tar-jay had some awesome curtain panels that matched my bedding perfectly.  I bought them and will have pics soon.

Um, hello. How dumb does that look!! The new ones look so much better!!  Now I have to clean my bedroom and take pics for you all!!

Homecoming - I'm feeling so old!!!

Well tonight was my daughter Taylor's first homecoming.  She is a freshman and has a boyfriend and all of this is making me feel really old!!  It was so nice to see her in a dress - I think the last time she wore a dress was 5 years ago at my sisters wedding!!  Not kidding - she is a jeans and t-shirt kinda girl. Things sure have changed since I was a teenager!!  They were all so excited and I'm sure they'll have a blast! Here are some pics of the group of kids she went with.

Goodwill Lamp - A Bright Idea

Remember my little Goodwill lamp I told you about here?  Well, she is all spruced up and lookin good!  I spray painted the base black (big surprise huh?) and covered the shade with fabric leftover from my no-sew roman shades.  I know, brilliant idea.  This stuff just comes to me naturally - ha!  I finished the shade off with some black trim that was leftover from another project.  Isn't she the cutest little lamp?

Here's a closer picture so you can see all the lovely detail trim I hot glued on.

I'm still working on my other Goodwill finds. The framed tin is for my master bedroom - I'll be posting pictures on that soon.  I glued a $1 store candlestick holder to the bottom of the glass vase and it looks nice - I just need to figure out where I'm going to put it!

Delicious Apple Crisp

I decided to make something with the 10 pounds of apples that we picked last weekend.  This is my mom's recipe and it's so quick and easy to make.


APPLE CRISP

6 large apples - peeled & sliced
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup water
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup flour
7 Tbs butter







Heat oven to 350.  Mix apple slices,
cinnamon and water in a greased
9 x 13 casserole dish.

In a separate bowl mix sugar, flour and butter until crumbly.
I cut the butter in small pieces and use a fork to mix it into the sugar and flour.

Sprinkle sugar mixture over apples.

Bake for 30 minutes.

Yummy!!!

This is delicious with Cool Whip on top or a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side.  Delicious!!!

Pottery Barn Inspired Bedroom - Part 2

Happy Friday!  I finished up my daughter's bedroom - finally! - and wanted to share what I did with you all.  We love Pottery Barn Teen but not their outrageous prices. I had to get creative because I'm cheap thrifty. Taylor loves the way her room turned out (and I'm pretty happy with it too). I know I would have LOVED a room like this when I was a teen.

The only thing I purchased from Pottery Barn was the duvet, bed skirt and sheet set. I made the headboard out of plywood and covered it with a coordinating sheet I bought at Walmart. The headboard is screwed into the wall and I hot glued some buttons from JoAnn's to cover the screws.  The vanity table was found in an antique store for about $20. It wasn't in great condition so I painted it a crisp white and love the way it turned out.

I painted the circles on the wall using a dinner plate and lunch plate.  I just held them up and traced around them then painted in the circles. Super easy and cheap!!

The dresser is an antique given to me by a dear friend years ago.  It belonged to her grandfather so I know it's probably about 100 years old!!  I painted it white and the drawers the colors of her room.

I wanted window panels to match but of course I wasn't going to pay full price for them.  My mom made these from the top sheet of the Pottery Barn sheet set that matched the duvet.

I found the desk at a garage sale for $10 and it was an ugly yellow color.  I painted it white and the knobs green.  Taylor loves her new message board that we copied from Pottery Barn Teen!  It was so easy and under $20 to make!!

I found this chair at a thrift store and painted it white. Then I recovered the chair pad with the pillow case from the Pottery Barn sheet set.

I hope you all enjoyed the tour of Taylor's room. Now I need to get working on a message board for little sis Hannah. The projects never seem to end!!


Oh, by the way, her room never looks like this. I cleaned it and made her bed before taking pictures. Usually there are clothes all over the floor and she hardly ever makes her bed. At least I have photos of how nice it can look!!

Watch Out Pottery Barn!!

I love Pottery Barn - really, I do.  They have beautiful furniture and accessories but their prices are insane! I always try to hide the Pottery Barn Teen catalog when it arrives. I know my teen daughter will beg for everything in it.  Well, she got the mail the other day and guess what came?  Um, yeah - the Pottery Barn Teen catalog.  She kept showing me pages of things she wanted and one of them was a message/bulletin board thingy for only $300.00!!  Are you kidding me?  Three hundred dollars for a bulletin board!!  It is neat and cute and can be customized for your room but come on.  No way am I spending that kinda money on a bulletin board.  I told her I could make her one that would look similar.  It would be totally awesome (yes, I'm an 80's girl) and she would love it.  Needless to say, she was not excited about the idea.  Until I started working on it and she could see how cool it was going to be.  This is Pottery Barn's version ($300):

 Here is what I came up with:

 I used chalk board paint, 3 cork tiles and 2 decorative cork tiles from Target (on clearance!). One of the tiles I covered in left over fabric and used scrap ribbon I already had to frame the edges.  Then, my handy man hubby trimmed it out with a $12 piece of molding from Home Depot.  Total cost for my totally awesome bulletin board:  Under $20.00!!!!  Take that Pottery Barn!!!

While we were in a crafty mood, I decided to spruce up the cork board she already had. It was just a plain cork board with a cheapo fake wood frame.  I painted it to match her room and then added scraps of paper (left over from scrapbooking) and some buttons and few other embellishments. It turned out really cute too!

A few other things I've been working on in her room:

Old chair from a thrift store - painted white and covered the cushion with fabric that matches her room.

Everything on the shelves was stuff I already had.  If it didn't match her room, I just painted it!


Right now her room is a total disaster!  I am painting her antique dresser and organizing all the crap lovely things she thinks she has to keep. Hoping to have it all done in the next few days then I'll have more pictures!


Oh, by the way, little sister Hannah wants a cool bulletin board for her room too!  Guess handyman hubby is going to be busy again this weekend!  : )
