Library Progress

Happy December!  Is everyone ready for Christmas?  I'm not!! No Christmas tree, no outside lights and no Christmas card picture yet. But I have made some progress on the library. Here is what I've been doing:

I recovered the chair with fabric . . .

. . . and my mom made some pillows for the parsons chairs. Thanks mom!

My mom also helped me paint the backs of the Billy bookcases. I used the same color that I used on the table. It took 2 coats of paint and a coat of sealer. I love that color!!

There is still a lot left to do but it's starting to look like a real room now! Handyman Hubby needs to jazz up the bookcases with trim so they look all purdy and built in. Stay tuned for updates on the longest and most annoying room makeover!! ha ha

Don't forget to enter the Favorite Things giveaway! The deadline is Friday, December 2nd at 8 PM.

Billy Is In The House!

That's right people! There are 3 Billy bookcases in my house. After checking on-line to make sure there were plenty in stock, Handyman Hubby drove back to Ikea over the weekend. Isn't he just sweet? That's 4 hours of driving just to get some dang bookcases! It beats paying almost $300 in shipping to have them sent here!! Yep, my $39.99 bookcases (times 3) plus shipping would have been over $500!!!! How crazy is that!

Here is what my library looks like now . . .

I just threw the books on there to get them off the floor. ; )  I'm going to paint the inside of the bookcases then Handyman Hubby will attach them together. After that we'll add a piece of MDF on the top and trim it out to look like one big built in bookcase. Well, that's the plan anyway.

See the new white candles in my candelabra? Much better!

Above the bookcases I want to do a gallery wall next to the chalkboard.

Here is the fabric I chose to make some pillows for the parsons chairs and to cover the cushion of the white chair (see above photo).

I also found some curtain panels at Target for - are you ready for this - $7.99 each!! I just wanted something simple and these are perfect. Can't complain about the price either!

I'm still debating on whether or not to put blinds on the windows. I like the open feeling so I might just leave it as is for a while.

Here's a close up of the window panels. I just love them!

My vision is finally coming together! Remember that just a few short weeks ago the room look like this . .

Amazing what a little paint (and primer) can do!

Have an awesome day my friends!!!

Menu Plan Monday

Happy Monday! This week my menu plan will be a bit different due to Thanksgiving and my family being out of town. The 4 of us have always spent holidays together but this year Handyman Hubby and the kiddos are going to Florida over Thanksgiving break. I'm staying home (in Ohio) to take care of the dog, 4 guinea pigs and 2 fish. My mom is visiting from Colorado so I can spend some time with her and my sisters. I never cook for just 1 or 2 so this will be odd for me.

Menu Plan for the week of November 21 - 27

Monday:  Parmesan Crusted Chicken, Rice, Broccoli

Tuesday:  Tacos In Pasta Shells

Wednesday:  Just me for dinner so I'll have soup and a sandwich

Thursday:  Thanksgiving dinner at my sisters

Friday:  Eat out w/my mom and sisters

Saturday:  Leftover Thanksgiving turkey & stuffing

Sunday:  Chicken Teriyaki w/Broccoli, Rice (Family is back home plus my mom will be here)

Chicken Teriyaki With Broccoli

2 garlic cloves, minced

1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes

4 scallions, chopped (green & white parts)

1/2 cup chicken broth

2 Tbs teriyaki sauce

2 cups cooked brown rice

4 cups steamed broccoli

Coat a large nonstick skillet with cooking spray and set pan over medium-high heat. When hot, add garlic; cook, stirring about 1 minute. Add chicken; cook until golden brown on all sides, stirring often, about 5 minutes.

Add scallions; cook until soft, stirring about 2 minutes. Add broth and teriyaki sauce, simmer until chicken is cooked through and sauce reduces slightly, about 5 minutes.

Spoon 1/2 cup cooked rice into each of 4 shallow bowls; spoon about 1 cup of chicken mixture and 1/2 cup broccoli over each serving.

HAVE AN AWESOME WEEK!!

Favorite Things Friday

I'm late again! The week just flew by and the weekend is here already.

We've had above normal temps for November but I think that is over now. Last night we dipped below freezing - brrrrr!

Here is something to keep your tootsies warm during those cold winter days.

Cozy Socks from Target. They are available in several colors at the very thrifty price of $5.00.

Have an awesome weekend and be sure to stop by next Friday for a Favorite Things Friday giveaway!!

DIY Artwork

Hello peeps! Can you believe that Thanksgiving is next week! Crazy I tell ya!

In between all the drama and chaos at my house I've actually been working on a few things. The walls of my new library are bare (except for the chalkboard). I have an old window that I'm going to hang in there but that's it. So I put my crafty hat on and made some DIY artwork.

This first one was fah-ree! I love to go through my giant pile of stuff I can't throw away decorating items and make something fabulous.

Wait! Before you think I've totally gone crazy, let me explain. This is a cabinet door from my kitchen project. Here it is primed and ready to be transformed into a gorgeous piece of art. Well, that may be stretching it just a bit. Hopefully it will be a DIY art project that doesn't look too homemade and cheesy.

Next step was to paint it a beautiful blue/turquoise color. So far so good.

Then I sanded and rubbed on some brown paint to distress it. Ummm, not sure if I'm liking this.

I decided to paint the middle of the cabinet door and then hot glued some old metal keys on. It was okay but not exactly what I wanted.

Here is what I ended up with . . .

I added some striped paper to the middle and painted over the distressed part with the same color I used on my library table.

Love, love, love it! I know it may not be for everyone but for me, well, it's pretty darn perfect!

I'm still working on the other project but here is a sneak peak . . .

I found a set of these at Kirklands a few years ago and they looked great when the walls were painted red. Now, not so much. So I took that baby apart and had this mess to work with.

I found this wrapping paper at Michaels in the Dollar bin.

I loved it so much that I went back and bought 2 more rolls!

I popped the plastic medallions out and painted them turquoise.

The grand total for this project was $1 for the roll of wrapping paper. Awesomeness!

That's where I'm at now. The frames need to be painted white and then I can put everything back together. I just know it's going to look fabulous when it's all done!

Have a great day!!

Just When I Thought Things Couldn't Get Any Worse . . .

. . . they did. In a BIG way. I've already cried, said some words that I won't mention here and had myself a pitty party. Why am I telling you all this? Well, for starters, that's why there is no menu plan for this week. I haven't even looked at my recipes, coupons or made a grocery list.

Remember my last post when I mentioned going to Ikea? We went this past Saturday. It's a 2 hour drive there but I was so excited to get my Billy bookcases that the long drive didn't matter. My excitement quickly diminished when I saw a tag that said the bookcases were "temporarily out of stock". WHAT! We just drove 2 hours and they are out of Billy bookcases! They had every color and finish in stock except for white. Hopefully they'll get a shipment of Billy's within the next week and we can drive back down again to pick them up. Oh fun! So, needless to say, the library hasn't changed much. This is all I've done in the past week . . .

I decided to keep this little black table by the front door. I found the mirror at Target for $20 and the faux plant and lamp came from Ikea.

Here is another view from the library looking toward the front door and hallway.

Oh boy that orange stained wood needs to be painted white! I'll just add that to my giant to-do list.  ; )

After all that excitement disappointment on Saturday, I had a major catastrophe on Sunday. My Etsy order that I had worked on for 3 days was ruined. All the materials I used had to be thrown away and I have to make everything again. There goes my profit . . .

I'm afraid of what might happen next. Good thing I've got a bag of candy cane Hershey kisses!!

Favorite Things Friday

Better late than never, huh? It has been a doozy of a week here so I'm a little late in posting this. Without getting too personal, I will just say this: a 16 year old daughter plus lots of drama = 1 stressed out mom! Nuff said!

There are 2 things that help me when I'm stressed. Retail therapy (aka shopping!) and chocolate. Tomorrow we are headed to Ikea so that should take care of my retail therapy! For my chocolate fix, I got some of these . . .

Hershey Candy Cane Kisses

These are only available during the Christmas season and I LOVE THEM!

If you've never tried these then you must go get some. Right now. Get in your car and buy a bag . . . or two. Seriously, they are that good.

Look at those beautiful stripes! Yummy!! I'm totally addicted!!

So there you have it folks. That is my favorite thing this week.

You know I'll be back soon to show you all the goodies I found at Ikea!!

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!!

Library Updates

I made a lot of progress on the Library/Sitting Room over the past few days. The walls are painted and I absolutely love the color!

The wall color is Frappe (Valspar). Doesn't the room look so different with the red paint gone? Excuse all the mess in the background. That is where the Ikea Billy bookcases are going. We're getting 3 bookcases and are going to attach them together then trim them out with moulding. I also purchased some white candles to replace the brown ones in the chandelier.

As you can see from the photo, I painted my table and put new slipcovers on the chairs.

The table was given to me by my grandma and I had originally painted it black. I wanted to lighten it up so I painted the legs White Room - the same color as our trim, doors and kitchen cabinets. I used my free Aquatic Mist Valspar paint sample for the top of the table. I just love that color!!

The new slipcovers are from Walmart. I got a great deal on them but they were too beige so I decided to bleach them. I love how they turned out!

This chest of drawers belongs to Handyman Hubby. It is the only piece we have left from his childhood bedroom set. I gave it a fresh coat of paint and replaced the knobs. It's great for extra storage space and I've filled every drawer!  ; )

This view is looking towards the front door and coat closet. I am keeping the small table there and hope to find a round mirror to hang above it. I also want to find a small lamp for the table.

After looking at this picture, I think the orange-y wood by the stairs needs to be painted white. What do you think? That is the same stain that was on my kitchen cabs and I don't like the way it looks next to the new paint and white trim.

There is still A LOT left to do but I've got my list and we're heading to Ikea this weekend! I think getting the bookcases in there and all the crap books off the floor will help a lot!

Favorite Things Friday

Is it really Friday? Wow! This week just flew by! I can't believe we're into November and Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away.

My favorite thing this week is a seasonal offering at Starbucks

Espresso and steamed milk, blended with mocha sauce and toffee nut flavored syrup. Topped with sweetened whipped cream, caramel sauce and a mixture of turbinado sugar and sea salt.

This is how they describe the drink on their website:

"Fall is full of drizzles. Drizzles of rain as the air cools, students reluctantly drizzling back to school, emails drizzling into your inbox … but not all drizzles dampen our spirits."
"Take for instance the drizzle of buttery caramel layered over sweetened whipped cream on our Salted Caramel Mocha. No rainy day could dampen sitting down with a good book and one of those. So why add the salt? Well, there’s no better way to excite your taste buds than with a little sprinkle of salt just before something sweet."
"A tiny bit of our premium sea salt and sugar topping deepens the rich flavors in this luxurious combination specially made to warm up the rainy days of fall."

Holy cow! Who wouldn't want to drink it after reading all that!

Starbucks has several drinks that are only available during the Holiday season and this one is my favorite.

Just a little tip for ya - DO NOT look at the nutrition information! Just drink and enjoy!

Have an awesome weekend!!
